Program Overview:

The Hispanic Youth Symposium is a national program where Latino high school students get the opportunity to have the college experience.  This program is designed to get students to think about college, their future professional lives, and the contributions they can make as Latinos in the community.  The annual Hispanic Youth Symposium is held at a local university and will consist of high school students from the around area spending 4 days and 3 nights on campus.

200 high schools students and 26 Resident Advisors are chosen from a pool of applicants to attend the symposium.  High school students will arrive mid day on day one, and have an opportunity to bond with their familia and their resident assistant.  On the second day of the program, the students will have the opportunity to discuss real-world policy issues and meet successful Latinos from many disciplines.  Students will meet doctors, lawyers, scientists, etc. and learn that they too can reach their professional goals.  On the third day, students will focus on college preparation and admissions.  College recruiters from local community colleges to top Universities around the country will be in attendance to talk to students about campus life, financial aid, and academic courses.  On the last day of the program, students will focus on career opportunities and meet professionals in the federal government and private sector.  In the afternoon, scholarships will be awarded to outstanding students as well as the winners of the speech, essay, art, and talent show competitions. By the end of the program, students will be highly charged, motivated, and inspired to achieve success.

The Resident Advisors, who are current college students or recent graduates, lead a familia, a group of 8-10 high school students.  All students attend workshops to prepare them academically and professionally including RAs, who will attend a set of workshops designed for college students.  Additionally, one resident assistant has the opportunity to win a $500 scholarship while participating in the 4 day program.
